This lighthouse had been on the "Endangered" list for some time but recently a group of people had started to plan for it restoration. On May 2, 2002, the lighthouse was hit by lightning and set on fire. It was fully involved when the firefighters arrived. While they were able to extinguish the flames quickly, it was too late to save the structure. The tower was destroyed and the remainder of the structure was torn down. All that remains of the site is the metal tower, also decomissioned, that replaced the structure you see in this picture. We say good-bye to another of these wonder and unique structures.

(Psa 36:9 NKJV) For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

This skeletal tower was built at Cape Henlopen in 1924, when the historic lighthouse on the Cape collapsed by beach erosion. In 1929, when further changes in the configuration of the Cape had made the light useless there, it was relocated to the Mispillion station. It remained in service here until it was deactivated in 1984.
